How to build Confidence And Eliminate Self-Doubt

Have you ever stepped out on warm-up ice, looked around at the competition, and thought, “How can I compete against THEM?”

For many skaters, this one thought can be paralyzing. So how do we deal with self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy, and a lack of confidence?

The Dictionary definition of Confidence is:

“A feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities”

A thought or belief that you can accomplish something and that thought or belief generates a feeling of “I Can”, those confident feelings come when the “I can’s” out weight the “I cant’s”.

The Link Between Confidence And Mental Practice

Building confidence and eliminating self-doubt takes the right tools, exercises, and mental practice just like mastering a physical skill like a double axel or your difficult combo spin, or any skill in your sport, it takes the right technique and lots of practice.

If you were to land a triple loop or double flip and never train it again you wouldn’t expect to land it perfectly in competition months later….Right?

Mental practice exercises are the “walk thru’s” and “drills” that skaters do on a daily basis to keep the mind on track and in alignment with the body, just like the walk thru’s that skaters do to feel the take-off of a jump and the alignment in rotation.

When our Body and Mind are in alignment we feel good, powerful, and CONFIDENT!

Our physical training exercises keep our jumps and skating skills on track… in “Automatic” so that when we compete… those elements are second nature in our Body allowing the Conscious “Thinking Mind” to take a rest and the Unconscious “Power” Mind that controls the bod to take over and perform to it’s potential.

If our Mental Training has been practiced consistently and with a commitment to the outcome, the Body through the Unconscious Mind stays Confident and Calm and does what it was TRAINED to do.

Building confidence is just like a building muscle
“use it or lose it”

Good Tools and Techniques always work if they are practiced & conditioned consistently, with commitment and with belief and trust that they will work.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be”
